Hydroponics: The New Face of Farming

Vegetable farming in India is a means of livelihood for the vast number of agrarian population of the country, but the unprecedented conditions paint a dark picture.

We as humans are the result of a lifelong process of evolution, always adapting ourselves to the ever changing environment. We evolved from being hunters and nomads to living in a settled civilisation, all along changing things around us to suit to our needs. Our existence today is because of an age old saying ‘survival of the fittest’. Mastering the art of survival has led to the drastic increase of population and a wide spread decrease in resources to feed them.

We adopted farming to sustain ourselves and started settling near water sources. Farming has since become the backbone of our society that has overtime been replaced with high yield seeds and better fertilizers to obtain more produce from the limited agricultural spaces. The innovations in traditional farming had its drawbacks in the form of pesticides and other chemicals that are carcinogenic in nature, while the unpredictable climatic conditions has done nothing but hold us back.

This phase of dilemma paved way to hydroponic farming entering the scene. The hydroponics system employs farming in greenhouse facilities, ensuring that we get clean and healthy vegetables while being eco friendly in nature. Hydroponics, in a nut shell means growing plants without soil, in a nutrient solution. This new face of farming has claimed many developed countries and are now growing roots in developing countries like India, where the unpredictable weather conditions and increasing population has taken a toll on conventional farming that is unable to meet the needs.

Hydroponic greenhouse allows farming in closed spaces, where the climate and temperatures are remotely controlled. The greenhouse protects the plants from the pests and harsh weathers, while promoting consistent growth throughout the year. The hydroponics system cultivates plant growth in coco peat and nutrient solution instead of actual soil. The Hydroponics method of farming saves almost 90% of the water used in conventional farming, hence, being eco friendly and advantageous for a world that is suffering from a water crisis. The produce from hydroponics is pesticide free, making it very healthy in nature and ideal for direct consumption.

Hydroponics is fast growing across the globe and it is only a matter of time before conventional farming is replaced entirely with this new evolution in farming.  Let’s embrace a good change for a better living.
